The name Niddry holds a deeply personal significance, rooted in cherished family history and the enduring legacy of my grandfather. It originates from Niddry Farm, where my grandfather devoted over 50 years of his life to working the land. Nestled on the outskirts of Winchburgh, West Lothian, this arable and cattle farm became more than just a workplace—it was a cornerstone of our family’s identity.
Some of my earliest and fondest memories are of summers and Christmas holidays spent riding in the tractor alongside my grandad. He was a great teacher, and by the age of six, I was driving a Massey Ferguson tractor across the fields—a thrilling experience for a child! Yet, the true highlight came when, at thirteen, I was entrusted to operate the massive combine harvester. These moments cultivated my deep appreciation for hard work, craftsmanship, and the connection between people and the land.
Time, as it often does, has brought change. Some time after my grandfather passed, I revisited the farm only to find it transformed—a sawmill now stood where the farm once thrived. While I have purchased timber from the local area to honour its legacy, it’s bittersweet; progress is inevitable, but I felt compelled to ensure that the name Niddry—and the memory of my grandad—lived on in a meaningful way.
This desire gave rise to Niddry Design, a woodworking company dedicated to sustainability and craftsmanship. I specialise in creating timeless wooden pieces, using only ethically sourced or recycled timber. My work is a blend of functionality and artistry, paying homage to the values my grandfather embodied. Every item I craft is a celebration of tradition, resourcefulness, and the enduring beauty of nature.
Through Niddry Design, I aim to keep the spirit of the farm alive, preserving its story and honouring the legacy of a man who shaped not only the land but also my life.
