“Sometimes, it’s important to remember that less is more. In this case, the client sought a simple yet meaningful gift—a cutting board for a friend who has been navigating a challenging period in their life. For this purpose, I selected a piece of exquisite English Beech wood, celebrated not only for its beautiful grain but also for its exceptional antibacterial properties, making it both a practical and thoughtful choice.
I crafted the board with careful attention to detail, squaring off the edges to create a clean, modern silhouette. To enhance its functionality, I incorporated a juice groove, which helps to catch any liquids, ensuring a mess-free experience during use. The surface was meticulously sanded to a fine 800-grit finish, resulting in a smooth, smooth texture that feels wonderful to the touch.
To further protect the wood and maintain its natural beauty, I finished the board with high-quality mineral oil, which nourishes the wood and brings out its rich colour, while also providing a protective barrier against moisture. Additionally, I added non-slip rubber feet to the bottom, ensuring stability during use and preventing any unwanted movement on the countertop.
The crowning touch was the personalisation. Each message is hand-engraved directly into the wood, adding a unique, sentimental element to the board. I chose to leave the engraving in its natural state, allowing the texture and warmth of the wood to shine through, which gives a softer, more inviting finish to the final piece. This cutting board is not just a functional kitchen tool; it’s a heartfelt gift, infused with care and thoughtfulness, meant to bring comfort and joy to its recipient.”
