This client sought a one-of-a-kind piece of oak for their kitchen worktop, and I came across a remarkable slab that featured a natural split running from end to end, held together by a slender piece of wood. I instantly recognised the potential to transform this wood into a unique and functional work of art for the customer.

To ensure the durability and aesthetics of the piece, I stabilised the split using three handmade bowties. I decided to enhance the split’s dimensions intentionally since I planned to fill the void with resin. The bowties were crafted from contrasting wood, serving both as a visually appealing detail and as a means to provide mechanical strength to the final board.

The resin filling was carefully matched to the colour palette of the client’s kitchen, seamlessly integrating the piece into its new home.

Once the structural elements were in place, I sanded the board to a fine 800 grit, allowing the natural textures of the oak to shine. Finally, I applied six coats of mineral oil to protect the wood while enhancing its natural beauty.

Today, this handcrafted board holds a place of pride in the client’s home, and I’m delighted to hear it is used daily, serving as both a functional kitchen tool and a stunning centrepiece. This project exemplifies the beauty of personalisation in woodworking, creating a lasting impact in their culinary space.
