I was asked by a couple in Ludlow if I could refurbish their stunning French Oak table which had faded over the years and was showing signs of deterioration. The previous wood infills were cracking and coming loose and the varnish/wax had worn through in places.
We managed to find a couple of dry days so I could take the table outside and start the sanding. Over a period of hours the table was sanded back to bare wood removing all the marks and and oil/wax. The old cracks were cleaned out and filled with Black Osmo Wood Filler. Once dry the table was sanded through to 320 grit with water sprays in between to raise the grain and then brought inside to start the oiling process.
I used Osmo Clear Satin Hard Wax oil which was applied with a foam pad. The secret is to add a small amount each time and not be tempted to apply it thickly. Each coat was dried for 18-24 hours and sanded very lightly with 800 grit before applying the next coat.
It takes 10 days for the Hard wax to fully cure but I think you will agree the table is ready for another 10-20 years of day to day life.
