The client envisioned a large statement piece to elevate their kitchen’s aesthetic and initially considered English Oak. After extensive discussions, shared photographs, and an in-person visit, they chose the exquisite London Plane wood for its unique charm.

London Plane wood (Platanus x acerifolia), also known as Lacewood, is a cherished British hardwood, renowned for its decorative appeal. Sourced from urban trees, such as those found in London’s parks or the Wirral area, it features striking, exotic medullary ray flecks and a beautiful spectrum of pink to reddish-brown hues. An eco-friendly choice, much of this timber is harvested from trees felled due to natural events like storms or necessary urban maintenance.

To craft the board, I addressed a knot hole with black resin, meticulously incorporating it as a feature rather than a flaw. Numerous hours were dedicated to shaping and sanding the board, enhancing its stunning organic edge and highlighting the intricate Lacewood pattern on top. The board was finished with six coats of high-quality mineral oil, deeply nourishing the wood to preserve its beauty. Additionally, non-slip rubber feet were attached to slightly elevate the board from the work surface, offering stability and protecting the underlying countertop.

This bespoke chopping board blends functionality with elegance, offering the client not only a useful kitchen accessory but also a piece of artisanal craftsmanship that serves as a focal point in their culinary space.
